2.2 Essential Questions

1. What is the difference between R-value and U-value? When are they used?
R- value meaures resistance to the transfer of heat, and U-value shows how much heat is allowed through. They are inversely proportional. R-value is used to rate insulation, whereas U-value is used to determine how much energy it will take to heat or cool a space.

2. What are some leading causes of solar gain?
lack of proper insulation, dark roofs absorbing heat

3. What key areas of a building can minimize heat loss?
walls, roof, floor

4. Why is a cost estimate important to create before starting a project?
so you can put a budget on the project

1. Why is wood so often used for residential buildings?
wood is both cheap and strong

2. What alternatives to wood frame construction are available and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
metal- stronger but more expensive, concrete- ineffective for framing

3. How are trusses able to span large distances?
strong & lightweight due to structure

4. What framing systems are used to support residential roofs?
roof trusses and rafters

5. How are different roof styles and pitches related to different architectural styles?
they are used for different environments
